Roofing Industry Terms

As a homeowner or business manager who does not work in the roofing industry, it may be intimidating to contact a roofing company and discuss details about roofing repairs or replacement. There is a specific terminology used in this industry and you should either ask information every step of the way about things you do not understand, or educate yourself a bit, by consulting glossaries.

Here are just a few examples of the most common words you will hear from more than one knowledgeable Denver roofer about a roof:

Flashing

Flashing is typically made of sheet metal and used to waterproof areas around roof penetrations (chimneys, vent pipes etc.) and valleys. It is a very important element of the roof that must be treated with particular attention, because most water leaks start because of improperly installed or damaged flashing.

Shingle granules

Most shingles are designed with a layer of crushed rock and ceramic coating on their surface, for increased resistance. If you notice granules in the gutters or around the house, it is a sign that your shingles are damaged or old and must be replaced.

Pitched roof vs. flat roof

A pitched roof has a certain slope, depending on its design. The space underneath the roof is known as the attic and can be used as a storage or living space. On the other hand, a flat roof has a very slight inclination, invisible to the eye, and no attic.
